Great Dane vs Snowpocalypse!
We got around 27 inches of snow in Denver this past weekend, and Gus had a blast running around in the snow! Thanks to the strong winds, there were spots where the snow drifts were around 4 feet deep, and Gus had quite the fun time enjoying some snow zoomies and playing in it :)

The Drool Is Out Of Control!
Переглядів 13 тис.3 роки тому
While they’re not quite in the same league as the world’s top droolers, Great Danes can still hold their own when it comes to drooling! However, the exact amount that your dog drools compared to other Danes is largely determined by their genetics. Great Danes drool more than most other breeds due to their facial composition. Their square jaw and loose lips are not well suited to containing droo...

We live on the rainy Oregon Coast and NO my boy has not gotten used to it. It totally cracks me up when he signals he wants to go out, I open the door, he looks out and essentially says: “Nevermind…” and turns away from the door. I always tell him what my mother always told me: “You’re not so sweet that you’ll melt.” 🤣

They are soo trainable and obedient. Ours used to carry their own leashes wher walking at the heel. Huh, slobber luckily our pair didn't. But.... we had a Mini and we learned not to leave the car's window open. Magnum generally missed the wheel and peeed on driver's seat😂 That and when he was a youngster, we put him in the garage aand he got bored and chewed up the car's wing mirror.

For me it’s my arm and my damn fingers. It’s a pain in the butt and I think it’s also because he doesn’t get out much. It’s not my dog but my mother’s and yet I’m the one who’s always having to babysit him because she’s never home and when she does get home, she’s z too exhausted to play or spend time with him.

I bought several dog beds. Finally I built my own. A tight nit rug bolted between two deck boards around the edges. Stuffed underneath with foam. It’s heavy because of the double stacked deck boards; so he can’t lift it

yes and consistency is a key tool too. We always said "Be right back" whether it was a trial drive away or to go see a movie and when we returned we consciously tried not to have any bigger "reunion actions" than if we just woke up. Read "Gina Goes to Galveston..." and see when she played with "Mr TP" one day! Cheers, Doc Willis

Our porch is quite narrow and our absolute goob wagged his tail so hard he burst the tip. Nothing more serious than a scab to heal but we had to go in the back door for about a week to let it heal and now we grab and hold his tail when we get home as we rush him into a bigger room. And the rain aversion is just the funniest. My partner usually takes him out during the day to pee because she's WFH and I'm inconsistent WFH so I think he just got used to her as the day schedule. He usually alternates between our makeshift offices throughout the day, but when its raining he'll spend the whole day in my office trying to hide from her taking him out haha.

I fostered a female Great Dane 118 pounds for two years. I would get down on my knees wearing leather gloves and we would play fight. I would try to grab both ears and she would try to bite the gloves. The bites did not hurt but occasionally a paw strike would nearly rake my face. She love doing this. I would also spank the booty making a loud but harmless noise. Often the play fight would end up on a futon where we would lay side ways and also play fight. We establishes a protocol where either one of us could initiate the contest. Never got hurt but I occasionally had to apologize if an ear grab caused hurt. I had to rehome her to a family with Male Great Dane looking for a friend when she got too strong for me to control in public when encountering other Dogs. The rehome should resolve her Dog socialization issue.

Oh, wow! I'm that crazy Great Dane lady that always stops to talk to any Great Dane and their person! Was privileged to have six Great Danes in my life over a period of 25 years in South Africa. Heartsore that I'm currently not able to have another one. To add to your list, a Great Dane's head lines up beautifully with the top of your kitchen units .... beware when unpacking your groceries, or preparing dinner!

We need HELP. We have four dogs, we brought two siblings into our house a year ago. One of them has a “reactive personality.” Meaning that, he will react in a bad way to anything going on around him that causes disruption with our dogs. If anyone has any suggestions on how we can stop this. We would be grateful. We can’t even have guests come to our home without them being put in the crate. I thought about the shock collar with the remote control to try to stop them, especially our reactive dog, Jack… But, I don’t want to do anything to them that might make things worse. I appreciate anyone’s help here that might be able to help me. We absolutely don’t want to lose any of these dogs because of their going crazy when the doorbell rings or someone knocks at the door. We’re trying to calm him down. We’ve tried treats, it’s literally a scrum at the door of all of them barking going crazy. I can’t get to any of their attention. . Any suggestions my dog loving friends? These are terrific pups. They love us so much… But they are so different when someone else comes to our house. Thanks for reading and if anyone has any suggestions, thank you for your help. We have considered “doggy Boot Camp” right now, my brother is dying from cancer and is on hospice care. He also has dementia. I’m trying to take care of him and the dogs and now my injured wife as well. Thanks for reading this very long post. I’m sorry for being so long.

Well, it sounds like you have zero control over the dogs. I would suggest you get someone to help you (by ringing your doorbell) and you practice directing your dogs away from the door and either into another room or other set place for them you choose. You might need to practice this with one dog at a time until you condition all of them to listen to your direction. This won't be easy or quick. I would start with 10-15 minutes a day with each dog. I'm also curious to know how much exercise they get.

I've just started (day 4) keeping dogs; brother-in-law donated 1 male German shepherd and a 1 year old male dane; first I thought the dane was a 2 or 3 year old for its size; the dane had been mishandled prior to joining us - starved quite a bit; he guzzles his food like nothing I've seen; thanks to you, I just learned they're great drinkers. I'm getting to love this animal, quite social - I thought it had some mental issue being quite restless wanting to jump/hug everyone in its way; I called the vet in, it just turned out it's just its character. And yes, now I realize he loves to talk. Paul - UG

I was 11 or 12 when we got our first Dane. We were a house of five boys, so there was no shortage of brotherly violence. Our Dane HATED it. He was this big brindle referee that growled and talked disapprovingly and physically got between us when he felt things had escalated too far. He was an absolutely fantastic dog; made it past his 13th birthday.

The correct term is Deutsche Dogge . it is a german breed not a Danish breed . i had three over a period of twenty years but the last one broke my heart so severely when he died, i said never again . i was messed up for two years after that . i took him everywhere with me . i took out the passenger seat in my pickup and put a mattress on the floor . he would ride standing g up with his head and chest out the window . this scared the crp out of other drivers when they looked to the left at a stop light and saw this monster our creature staring at them .lots of screeching and " hey you've got a horse in your car " comments which became very annoying after a time . anyway don't get one if your an emotional person .
